BEADED ANIMAL HEADS
About ten years after beginning to create bronze sculptures, I decided to add a new dimension to my art that reflects my interest in mosaics, beads, and the found objects I constantly collect when outdoors. Some of these ideas had already crept in to my bronzes when I pressed beads, shells and sea glass into some of the clay sculptures. I hit on the idea of fanciful trophy heads to be mounted on the wall—no animals harmed in the creative process! My love of the patterns and organic shapes in nature led me to create intricate beaded patterns on the surface of each animal, to represent camouflage and protection; the irony being that they ended on the wall anyway.
The animals are very time consuming to create and I can only do a limited number each year but they have been very well received and I have sold dozens to date. They have the virtue of being one of a kind like a painting and add color and interest on the wall. It is the most interesting artistic endeavor I have undertaken and I delight myself with their magical qualities.
